ICE BRIDGE GONE
LONDON, February 5. Reuters Mos.cow correspondent reported this morning that the Germans appear to be continuing attempts to bring more reserves over the Oder to reinforce the positions they still hold. Zhukov launched a powerful drive today to split open these defences. Though the thaw, combined with exceptionally fierce German resistence, has slowed down the main Russian advance, ground is being gained all along the front in heavy fighting. Mild temperatures prevailed today over large areas of eastern Europe, bringing mud and slush, which is hampering the Red Army's movements along the Oder. Any possibility of taking tanks across the ice on the Oder has gone, and it is believed that even infantry will be unable to cross over the ice.
The fighting is especially bitter today in the Kustrin sector, as the Rusr sians try to fight their way into the city.
The Russian High Command has maintained silence on the operations in the Stettin direction, where Zhukov's tanks have cut behind enemy groups.
