Announcing the decision, Miss Neumann congratulated all the competitors on the high standard they had attained. She said it was a very nne thing to see so many young people expressing their thoughts in clear and often beautiful language. Mr. Casey complimented his Grace on his foresight in presenting the award, saying that such encouragement would enable young Catholic men and women to take their place in the building of a new world based on a foundation of Christian principles The Rev. Father Callaghan also congratulated his Grace and the speakers, and offered many useful hints for their guidance in future orations His Grace said that it gave him great pleasure to listen to the fine speeches that had been delivered and expressed the hope that as time went on an even higher standard would be achieved. The presentation of prizes 'for the Catholic Writers' Movement Essay Award also took place during the evening, the winners being Peter Berry (St. Patrick's College, Wellington) 1 Terence Ryan (St. Patrick's College, Silverslream) a 2, and Miss Pauline Hoskms (St. Mary's College) 3. A large audience, including members of the clergy and Marist brothers, was present at the contest, and the Rev. Luther I, Burning, S.M., was chairman.
