ALLIED PRESSURE ALL ALONG
LONDON, November 22.
Today has been another day of relentless Allied pressure all along the Western Front/with swift advances in Alsace and Lorraine. The latest reports give this picture from north to south: In the Netherlands, resistance to the British Second Army in the German pocket across'the Maas is now mostly north of the Venlo area. The Germans have been cleared from the .west bank of the river opposite Roermont, but their guns on the east bank i have been shelling our men. Southeast of Roermont, inside Germany, British and American troops are sloggin<* their way into the Siegfried Line defences towards the Roer River. It has been a day of driving rain A correspondent says the Germans are keeping up their strenuous efforts to break our grip in the Geilenkirchen area, and put in two counter-attacks supported by a considerable weight of armour. The Americans have been pressing on beyond Eschweiler, and are now nine miles on the road out of Aix. There has been more progress on the southern hall of the front The liberation of Metz was completed this afternoon. The Third Army is developing the threat to the Saar territory, io the south, American and French troops of the Seventh Army are sweep-1 ing up the Vosges passes towards Strasbourg. In Alsace, the German armies are reported to be in confusion French First Army tanks have liberated Mulhouse, and are racing across the plains towards Colmar 20 miles to_ the north. A correspondent says their victory has been .complete A German counter-attack was held and the Germans have been pushed back into the pocket east of Belfort, with their escape lines cut.
