SOIL CONSERVATION

Representatives of various local bodies in Southland expressed themselves in agreement with a proposal to establish a catchment district in the province. .

A conference yesterday discussed soil conservation and river control, and a catchment district proposed is the area draining into the sea from east of the Waikawa harbour to the west end of Te Wae Wae Bay- and comprising, the whole of the catchments of the four major rivers, the Mataura, Oreti, Aparima, and Waiau. The proposal has now to go before the local bodies concerned.
