DIMINISHED FLOOD

AUSTRALIAN REGULATIONS

CANBERRA, October 3,

A marked slackening has been evident this year in the issue of national security regulations. The average monthly number has been the lowest since the war began. For the. nine months ended September 30 only 144 regulations had been gazetted, compared with 317 during 1943, 557 in 1942, 327 in 1941, and 296 in 1940. , The issue of orders under the regulations has also decreased sharply, while of orders still in force many have been drastically modified. Officially only 168 national security regulations are now in operation.

t Orders have been issued in such prolific fashion since the outbreak of war that even the Federal Law Department does not know how many there are in existence. The Estimates vary it between 8000 and 10,000 orders.
