KARORI WEST SCHOOL

HEAD TEACHER WELCOMED

Mr: G. -N. Taylor, formerly headmaster of the' Taita School, who- recently .■ took up his: ■ duties as head teacher of the Karori West School in succession to . Miss F. M. Hind, was given an. enthusiastic - welcome at a large gathering of parents in the Karori West School last week. The' chairman of.the school committee, Mr. W. J. Wilson, said that Mr. Taylor had a distinguished record as a teacher and as a soldier. He referred particularly to: Mr. .Taylor's fine service in the last war as a member of the Main Body,'.-'stating, that he was twice mentioned in'dispatches and a valley on Gallipoli Peninsula was shown on British military maps as "Taylor's Hollow," a being named after Mr. Taylor. When the present war broke out Mr. Taylor was called up from the t Reserve of Officers and with the rank of lieutenant-colonel raised and commanded the Second Battalion of the Wellington Regiment He also was one of the -first' officers to pass through the New Zealand Military Staff College and afterwards was appointed commanding officer and chief instructor of the Central District Training Unit at Waiouru. . After Japan came into the - -war he took command of the Second Battalion in the field. He returned to the teaching profession at the end of 1943. Other speakers who joined in the welcome to Mr. and Mrs. Taylor were Mr. E. Osboldstone, president of the Home and School Association,- Mr. A. R. Cliffe, secretary of the School Committee: and \ president of the Karori West, Residents'- Association, Mrs. T. R. Smith, secretary 'of the Home and School Association, and Mr. L. H. Joblin, head - teacher of the Model School who was acting head teacher during the second term this year. An enjoyable musical programme was provided, items being contributed by the school choir, Mesdames Joblin and Chapman, Misses Beatrice Taylor and June Taylor, and Mr, J. F. Feehan.
