OBITUARY
MISS E. J. WILLIAMS
Miss Elvira Jane Williams, who died recently, lived during the later years of her life mostly in retirement at Silverstream. She was a daughter of the late Mi;. G. P. Williams, M.1.C.E., of Upper Riccarton, Christchurch, who came out in the steamship Great Britain in 1869, and who for some years was the civil engineer for the Canterbury Provincial Government. She was a niece of Sir Joshua Williams, P.C., the Supreme Court Judge, and granddaughter of Sir Thomas Tancred, who at one time owned "Taratahi" near Carterton, and land in Canterbury. Sir Thomas Tancred came out to New Zealand in the Charlotte Jane, one of the first four ships sent out to found the Canterbury settlement in 1850. He was a brother of Mr. Henry Tancred chairman of the Canterbury Provincial Council. The present Sir Thomas Tancred the late Miss Williams's cousin lives at Aldborough Manor Boroughbndge, Yorkshire, the family seat for many generations. Miss Williams was beloved by all who knew her for her many deeds of kindness an, her philanthropic way of life. Her only brother, Mr. G T P Williams lives in Wellington. The burial t?ok place at Karori Cemetery.
