A soldier, Kenneth Hayward, aged 20, who pleaded guilty last week to the theft of a bicycle and. a child's cycle of a total value of £30 10s was admitted, on the recommendation of the pi-obation officer, to probation for 18 months by Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Prosecuting last week Senior-Sergeant J. G. Paine said Hayward sold one machine for £5 and accompanied the owner to the police station to report the theft. The Bench ordered restitution of £8 15s as a condition of the probation.
