CONFERENCE HELD

WIDE REPRESENTATION

A hundred delegates to the National War Loan Conference are discussing- in Wellington the lines_ of the coming Victory Loan campaign. Mr. W. L. Ward, Governor of the Reserve Bank, is presiding, and the delegates are thoroughly representative of the Dominion's public life. They include representatives from women's national organisations. The chairman welcomed the delegates and gave a brief survey of the task they will face when they, return to their own districts. Mr. T. N. Smallwood, head of the National Savings organisation, explained how the whole of its resources are being placed at the disposal of the loan campaign committees, and Mr. R. C. Addison, chairman of the Associated Banks, undertook on their behalf to give every assistance. A broad picture of New Zealand's Avar finance Avas presented by Mr. C. J. Atkin. Accountant to the Treasury. The Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department, Mr. J. G. Young, pledged the full help of his Department in every part of the Dominion. All phases of the campaign plan were explained by members of the Working Committee, and delegates attended a display of films which will be shown at all* the picture theatres when the campaign starts. ADDRESSES BY MINISTERS. The Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) and the Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash) gave information regarding the general position of the war, and both Ministers expressed the Government's gratitude to the delegates and their associates all over the Dominion for their great services in achieving success for the past war loans, thus maintaining the country's Avar effort on a sound financial basis by means of taxation and voluntary loans. NeAV Zealand, said Mr. Nash, had a great reputation overseas for its fighting men and the Avork of its civilian population in providing food and other essentials to the fighting services. That reputation carried a great responsibility, and it was essential that there should be no slackening of effort because the Avar situation was improving for the Allies. The conference proceeded to discuss proposals for fixing loan objective quotas for each district on an equitable basis, having regard to their respective resources.
