MR. J. SWINDELL

The death occurred recently of Mr. Joseph Swindell, an old resident of Christchurch, at the age of 93. Born in London in 1851, Mr. Swindell came to New Zealand with his parents in the ship John Temperley. He and his father were under contract to Messrs. G. Cootes and Co., watchmakers and jewellers, of Christchurch. Mr. Swindell remained with this firm for 40 years, and then started in business on his own account. Failing health obliged him to retire about 16 years ago. His wife, who was a daughter; of the late Mr. James Gapes, a former Mayor of Christchurch, predeceased him 19 years ago. Mr. Swindell is survived by four children—Mrs. A. H. Kent and Mr. H. E. Swindell, of Wellington, and Mrs. J. G. Greenwood and Mr. G. A. Swindell, of Christchurch. A son, Frederick, died some years ago. There are 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
