His Excellency the Governor-General received the Acting Prime Minister, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, this afternoon.
Mrs. Arthur Grenfell, vice-president of the Young Women's Christian Association of Great Britain, has arrived at Government House.
July 12.
This morning his Excellency the Governor-General presided at a meeting of the Executive Council. The Hon. Mrs. R. Barnard has arrived at Government House.
The Rev. Russell Allerton, formerly vicar of St. Thomas's, Auckland, and now a senior chaplain in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, has been appointed dean of St. Peter's Cathedral, Hamilton, subject to his acceptance. Bishop Cherrington has been acting as his own dean for several years since the resignation of Dean T. P. Weatherhog. The Rev. C. W. Chandler, who has been elected a canon of St. Peter's Cathedral, is the vicar of Cambridge. He was formerly assistant missioner in Auckland.
Mr. W. Hall-Jones, resident engineer of the Works Department in Hamilton, will retire shortly after 40 years' service.
Mr. H. E. Moston, secretary of the Labour Department, is visiting Auckland.
Mr. J. A. C. Allum has been ■ reelected chairman of the Auckland Centennial Memorial Park Board, and Mr. A. S. Bailey vice-chairman.
Mr. H. W. Maiden, who has retired from the literary staff of the "Evening Post," was fare welled at a staff gathering yesterday afternoon. In expressing appreciation of the service given by Mr. Maiden over a period of U years with "The Post, the editor (Mr. J. R. Smith j made :eference to Mr. Maiden's aptitude for' specialist work and to the able manlier in which he had carried out his wide range of journalistic o.uties. A presentation was made on behalf of the staff, and best wishes extended to Mr. Maiden for his future.
Charged in the Magistrate's Court today with the theft of eight radio valves, valued at £2 6s, the property of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Rex Stuart Carmody, soldier and agent, 40, pleaded not guilty and elected to be tried by a jury. Evidence for the prosecution was heard by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., and Carmody was then committed for trial. He was represented by Mr. W. E. Leicester.
