MR. JERRAM RETIRING

The retirement of Mr. J. H. Jerram. general manager of the State Fire and Accident Office, and the appointment of Mr. R. H. Newbold to succeed him were announced today by the Minister in Charge of the Department (Mr. Nordmeyer). After experience 'in , private insurance companies, Mr. Jerram joined the head office staff of the State Fire Office in February, 1905, one month after the office was opened for business. He was promoted to be deputy general manager in 1908, and general manager in 1923. In 1925 the accident branch, hitherto attached to the Government Life Office, was transferred to the State Fire Office. Mr. Jerram's administrative service covers a period of great expansion in the activities and progress of both the j fire and accident branches to their present leading position in the Dominion. During the same period,insurance protection generally has been advanced by legislation in many directions beyond that of other countries, and in the preparation and later administration of measures, such as the Motor Vehicles Insurance (Third-party Risks) Act, 1928, and the War Damage Act, 1941, Mr Jerram's knowledge and experience have been valuable. As an elected member representing the Public Service; Mr. Jerram has served continuously on the Public Service Superannuation Board since 1922, latterly acting as chairman, and since 1927 he has been Government representative on the Public Service Appeal Board. He received the Imperial Service Order in 1937. Mr. Newbold has had lengthy, insurance experience. He received his early insurance training wtih insurance companies in Wellington before joining the State Fire Office in Wellington in 1910. He was promoted to New Plymouth as branch manager in 1920. and to Auckland in the same capacity in 1924. In May, 1942, he succeeded the late Mr. L. H. Osborn as deputy general manager at the head office. In his younger days Mr. Newbold was well known in Rugby and cricket circles in Wellington, and also rowed for some years with the Star Boating Club. He continued with cricket at New Plymouth and represented North Taranaki for four years. ,
