PRESSURE ON PORTUGAL
BRITAIN HOLDS UP SUPPLIES i Rec. 10.50 a.m. LONDON, May 12. The British naval authorities have held up for some days a number of merchantmen laden with coal, wheat, and oil for Portugal, says the "Evening Standard's" diplomatic eorres- ' pendent. • . The official explanation in London is that the hold-up is due to technical reasons. However; expert observers ■in Lisbon believe that the ships will not sail until. Portugal agrees to ban1 wolfram exports to Germany. Portugal's economic plight is serious, and in the event of Allied blockade would be desperate. There is a serious shortage of wheat, and unless shipments of coal and oil arrive 'soon, the country's industries will be threatened with complete standstill.
