RAILWAY OFFICERS
NEW APPOINTMENTS
The appointment of Mr. F. H. McAuley to the position of Chief Accountant, and Mr. W. Robertson to that of Superintendent of Workshops, New Zealand Railways, is' announced by the Minister of Railways (Mr. Semple). Both appointments result from the retirement of officers who have completed the requisite 40 years of service in the Department. Educated at Waitaki Boys' High School, Mr. McAuley joined the railways as a cadet in the district traffic manager's office, Christchurch, in 1910. He was stationed as clerk at various Canterbury centres, and after serving with the New Zealand ExpeditionaryForces, resumed duty with ,the Department in Christchurch, where he remained till 1923, when he was appointed statiorimaster at Rewanui and later at Rolleston. In 1926, following two years as passenger and goods clerk in Christchurch, he was promoted to assistant audit inspector, Christchurqh, and in 1935 was transferred to. a similar position at the head office, Wellington. He became revenue accountant in 1936 and continued in. that position till last year, when he was advanced to assistant chief accountant and subsequently appointed chief accountant. Mr., McAuley is an accountant by examination and is a member of the New Zealand. Society of Accountants. Mr. Robertson entered the service in 1906 as an apprentice fitter at HiU- ■ side Workshops, Dunedin,, where he remained, till 1923, when he was transreferred to Otira. During his seven years at Otira he occupied several positions, including that of senior engineer. In 1930 he was promoted to works equipment foreman, at Hillside, and later to a similar position at the Hutt workshpps. Subsequently he was moved to Otahuhu as time study, officer, and from 1936 till 1940 he served there as assistant to the works • manager, his elevation to the position of works manager being made in 1941. Later in the same year he was transferred to the Hutt workshops as works manager,. and in 1943 became workshops inspector, attached to the Chief Mechanical Engineer's - Office, Wellington.
