NAVAL BASE PARTY

OVER A THOUSAND CHILDREN Hoop-las, coconut shies, fireworks, lucky dips—everything that could possibly be thought of was there for the entertainment of children at the Naval1 Base on Wednesday afternoon, when the personnel of the Auckland Naval District held a children's party. The party was principally for the entertainment of the children of naval men resident in the district, also the children of those serving overseas or who are prisoners of war or missing, and the children of naval men who i have lost their lives during the present war. These, together with other children and a number of adults, official representatives of civic organisations, and the Services, made an attendance of nearly 1700. . , The party began at one o'clock, and until a quarter to two three naval vessels ferried the guests across the harbour to. the naval base.. SAILORS AS PIRATES. The sailors entered into the spirit of the game, and with perfect organisation entertained the delighted young people. A number of them acted the role of pirates and landed in the base early in the afternoon, causing much fun and merriment until, in the course iof a fire display, they were later hosed off. Another feature was a diving display by naval divers, who spoke under water. A baby show was held, the winning babies receiving national savings bonds as prizes.
