MAY BE MOVED

GREENWICH OBSERVATORY

LONDON, January 26. Greenwich Observatory may be moved, mainly because of the increasing pall of London smoke. The Astronomer Royal, Sir Harold Jones, said that the Admiralty approved the move, but the authorities had to obtain his Majesty's consent. The Observatory is at present dispersed because of bomb damage and for security. Sir . Harold Jones said j that in the event of a move the longitude degrees would remain. Since its foundation by Charles II! in 1674, the Royal Observatory at' Greenwich has been the point from which the longtitudes on all British maps and charts are reckoned.
