ST. KILDA TEAM WINS

DUXEDIN, January 26.

The New Zealand championship bowls tournament concluded this afternoon when the final of the pairs was played on the St. Kilda green between P. H. Edwards and E. W. Travers (St. Kilda), and A. Williamson and D. H, Joseph (Canterbury). A gusty wind made conditions difficult. Edwards and Travers won, 21-11. Williamson and Joseph were members of tho winning four at the 1941 tournament in Chrlstchiirch, when the team was skipped by P. Munn, and both were experienced tournament players. Travers was champion of the Waimate Club for eight years. Edwards was Champion of the St. Kilda Club in 1928/1936, and 1941.

Joseph scored a three on the first end and on the next end the Canterbury skip drew the shot with his first bowl, being three inches behind the jack. Travers endeavoured to run Joseph's shot bowl into the ditch, but was unsuccessful. However, Joseph moved the jack on to one of Edwards's bowls and St. Kilda got one. St. Kilda got two on the next end. On the fourth end, the first six bowls wero very widely scattered, but Travers's drew two shots a foot from the jack. St. Kilda scored a single on the fifth, but the Canterbury men got two on the sixth and seventh ends'. After ten ends, Travers led 11-7. Canterbury got two shots on the 11th. The closest bowling by the leads took place on the 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th heads, the 15th being burnt twice. On the second replay, St. Kilda scored two and 'singles on each of the next three ends took the score to 21-10 in their favour. On the 20th end Williamson drove with his last bowl, and took his previous bowl out, leaving Travers lying three. Joseph drove but missed, and then burnt the head. Canterbury scored a single on (he replayed end, and the match ended 21-11 in St. Kilda's favour. /
