THE WELLINGTON MEN
(Special to "The Post.") DUNEDIN, This Day. The fifth and sixth rounds of the fours championship were played yesterday. The greens were fiery until late in the day, when rain began to fall. Of Wellington's representatives five aref likely to qualify. They are Petono (D. Hunter), five wins; Central Petone (E. .Caley), four wins; Victoria (J. B. Lawrie), four wins; Kelburn (T. Gray), four wins; Upper Hutt (C. A. Rendle), four wins. D. Hunter's Petone four played good bowls today and won both their games, the first against Imperial, 26-20, and the second against Kaikorai, 24-22. They look certain to qualify. J. W. Low'ry, who is third for Hunter, skipped the champion pairs when Petone won in 1937, and Hunter led for him on that occasion. Wellington (J. Moffltt) won their first game easily, defeating United 32-18, but went down In the next to Caversham, who won by 24-13. W. Gilbert's Kelburn four lost to Linwood, 24-20, and Tainui, 26-19. Thorndon (P. W. Smith) lost to Sydenham, 27-18, and Kaikoraf, 23-21. The Seatoun four (S. M. Stone) havo still to win a game. They lost today to United, 21-20, and Stratford, 29-20. Upper Hutt (C. A. Rendle) lost the morning game to New Brighton, 23-22, but. had a good win against Kaituna, 29-16. Lower Hutt (J. Johnson), who are in one of the strongest sections, lost to Christchurch U.S.A., 36-24, and then went on to beat Runanga in a close scoring game, 24-23. Victoria (J. B. Lawrie) had two comfortable wins, 24-19, against Phoenix, and 29-17 against Timaru. Central Petone (E. Caley) w6n against St. Kilda, 24-16, and lost to Alexandra, 32-20. Newtown (G. B. Mapplebeck) had their first win in the competition when they defeated Anderson's Bay, 26-24, but they lost to Christchurch, 26-14. Hataitai (H. Watts) lost against Haworth's strong Canterbury four, 25-19, but had a big win against Kaikorai. 28-12. Thorndon (M. J. Casey) had two wins, the first against Beckenham, 20-19, and the second against St. John's, 31-22. Kelburn (J. L. Morgan) were down 28-15 against Kaiapoi, but got to within one point of Dunedin, 18-17. Seatoun (B. G. Glennie) met two more reverses,' their victors being Elmwood, 26-22, and Opoho, 20-12. . Kelburn (T. Gray) played very soundly to win both games by' good margins, 28-17 against Rakaia and 26-14 against Dunedin. The Lower Hutt four skipped by W. F. Hadwin slipped down the ladder, being beaten by West End, Timaru, 23-15, and St. Kilda, °4-ll Victoria (J. E. Cooper) lost to Shirley, 23-10, and Dunedin, 27-18.
