JAPANESE BEATEN BACK
Government House, Wellington, January 19. His Excellency the Governor-General presided at a meeting of the Executive Council this morning. Mr. L. A. McKenzie has been appointed secretary of the Chrjstchurch Returned Services' Association. He has been assistant secretary for 14 years. ' ■
LONDON, January 18. British troops on the Arakan front in Burma have beaten back Japanese counter-attacks east and south-east of Maungdaw. During the weekend R.A.F. fighters harassed Japanese communications in the Mayu battle area, and Japanese positions were attacked four times by our dive-bombers. In northern Burma, Chinese troops have occupied two more villages. British and American aircraft supported the troops by attacking nearby Japanese bases and supply dumps.
