TAXI-MAN CHARGED

USED TYRES WITHOUT PERMIT

The prosecution of Thomas Stanley Munt, taxi proprietor, for using tyres without the consent of the Commissioner of Supply, was described by Mr. P. H. Putnam in the Magistrate's Court yesterday as the first of its kind to have been brought. Senior-Sergeant G. J. Paine said that the Department concerned asked for no penalty, but brought the charge in the hope that it would act as a deterrent to others. Munt had declared his possession of tyres other than those on his car.when that was required of him, but he had used those tyres without the consent of the Commissioner of Supply. He had acted quite honestly, and other people had done the same thing, not knowing the existence of the regulation requiring them to obtain permission to use such tyres. In entering a plea of guilty Mr. Putnam said that' not .01 per cent, of motorists were aware of that "extraordinary position." Munt applied for a permit for new tyres, and when asked what had happened to his old ones, which he^ had declared, he replied that he had used them. That was the reason for the prosecution. Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., convicted Munt and ordered him to pay costs.
