TEACHING OF RELIGION

P.A. AUCKLAND, November 9. Saying that there were specialist teachers in many school subjects but none in religion, Canon S. Parr, of Christchurch, urged the need for training teachers to give such instruction when making a resolution on this question before the Anglican General Synod. He pointed out that he was referring not only to religious instruction in Anglican schools but also in" State schools.

"At the present time there is no means of teaching our teachers to give religious instruction," Canon Parr said. There were no specialists in religious instruction, all the work having to be done by amateurs. He hoped that the way could be found to train teachers.

It was decided to direct the Church's provincial youth council to consider the possibilities of training teachers and to report to the standing committee of the General Synod.
