DINNERS SPOILED
A STOP-WORK MEETING
O.C. AUCKLAND, This Day. Dinners were spoiled in Auckland last evening through an unexpected shortage of gas. Even districts which by reason of their proximity to the gasholders had escaped the worst effects of the shortages during the early winter experienced extremely low pressure during the hours' of peak demand. A stop-work meeting of the gasworks on Monday afternoon was given by the Auckland Gas Company as the prime cause of the shortage. It was stated that the meeting lasted for about two and a half hours and was concerned with a question of overtime and extra payments. Owing to the loss in production during a peak period of con-, sumption, the stocks in the holders had to be drawn upon and-as a consequence there was little reserve to meet yesterday's demands. Memories of the daily shortages of gas in the winter inspire users of the Herne Bay trams to take continual note of the height of the holders as they pass by. One result yesterday was that a number of wives were warned by telephone from city offices that it would be wise to prepare an evening meal which would not require a great deal of gas. At midday one holder was empty and the larger one was only about a quarter full.
