FATAL AIR CRASH
EVIDENCE AT-INQUEST
P.A. AUCKLAND, This Pay. An inquest into the deaths of itw<t> members of the Air Force who were killed on September 13 when their plane crashed into a gully at Waiuku during training exercises, was held before the district Coroner. The victims were Pilot Officer William David McJannet, of Christchurch, who was pilot of the machine, and Sergeant Douglas Martin James Cairns, of Auckland.
Constable Buckley stated that shortly before noon on the day of the fatality he saw an aircraft lose height. The machine went into a vertical climb, rolled over on its back, and fell towards the ground nose first. He arrived at the scene of the crash four minutes later ana found the -machine enveloped in flames. It was apparent from the nature of the er,ash that the two occupants would be killed as soon as the machine hit the ground. The fire brigade arrived but could not do anything. An Air Force crash crew arid ambulance later arrived, and after the flames were under control the bodies were removed ixom the wreckage. The Coroner returned a verdict of death through being involved in an aeroplane crash.
