MEETING IN MOSCOW
LONDON, September 20
In Moscow the first official meetings were held today between the Archbishop of York, Dr. C. F. Garbett, representing the Church of England, and the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church. Tomorrow, one of Russia's greatest saint's days, the Archbishop will assist at a cathedral service in Moscow. The British Ambassador and members of the British Embassy staff will attend.
The joint message from him and from the Archbishop of Canterbury, which he has handed to the Russian Patriarch, expresses deep sympathy with the sufferings of • the Russian people in the past two years, and expresses admiration for the Russian people and the Red Army. The Archbishops look forward to the day when, with the evil forces of Fascism overthrown, a true peace may be established. The"y said that they looked forward to a visit to England at an early date from a delegation of the Russian Church.
AMERICAN FLEET
NOW GREATEST IN WORLD
WASHINGTON, September 19. A Navy report releasing hitherto secret production records, says that the United States Fleet has been expanded to "the greatest sea-power on earth," more than 13 times bigger than in 1940. , The statistics included in the report show that the United States Navy, despite losses and transfers to the Allies, numbers 14,072 vessels, including 613 fighting ships, compared with 1076 vessels, including 383 warships, in 1940. Moreover, the Navy Air Force numbers 18,269 planes after writing off 6800 as lost or obsolete, compared with a total of 1744 in 1940. Claiming that "no other nation ever accomplished a naval construction programme of comparable size," the report points out the ability to build or rebuild on this scale gives the United States Navy a basic advantage over fleets of all other countries.
