MR. WILLKIE & PRESIDENCY
' WASHINGTON, August 7. Mr. Wendell Willkie informed members of the Republican National Committee that he will be a candidate for the Presidential nomination in 1944 only if convinced the party intends to support a liberal and constructive programme on both domestic and foreign issues and "old guard elements" cease to exercise control of the party policies, says the "New York Herald Tribune." Mr. Willkie emphasised that he will not compromise on his expressed views and principles, or make political deals in attempts to placate the isolationists and other groups within the party, which may seek to forestall his nomination. He expressed the opinion that the Republicans could succeed, where the New Deal had failed, in developing a tangible practical programme reflecting the new spirit of liberalism surging throughout the world as a result of the war.
