LUFTWAFFE BEATEN
BIG AIR BATTLE RAGES Rec. 9 a.m. LONDON, August 4. With the Germans • trying to shake off their Russian pursuers south of Orel, a big air battle went on over the Orel front during the last 24 hours, according to "Pravda," which states that the Luftwaffe made, a big but unavailing bid to wrest air supremacy from the Russians. Large formations of planes were in action, and air battles on a considerable scale developed, and went on for several hours. The enemy's defeat was conclusive. It is officially reported that more than 70 German glanes were shot down. "Red Star" says the Germans south of Orel are destroying bridges and mining roads as they retreat, but the Russians are overcoming all obstacles. To re-establish contact and apply pressure with fresh vigour one group of Russian tanks advanced 4J miles through every kind of obstacle. The enemy had no time 'to destroy equipment.
The Russians north of Orel have captured a new German stronghold, and the fighting in this area is intense.
Berlin radio said "the Russians on the Orel front launched attacks with crushing superiority of numbers, and with a fury that could hardly be surpassed.
