NATURALISATION BILL
ALIENS WHO VOLUNTEER
To give effect to a War Cabinet decision to naturalise aliens who volunteer for service with the Armed Forces although not possessing the necessary statutory residential qualification of five years, a British Nationality and Status of Aliens <jn New Zealand) Amendment Bill was introduced in the House of Representatives, last night, and was read a first time.
The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr. Parry), who was in charge of the Bill, stated that it was an involved measure, although it did not contain many new features. The Bill proposed to incorporate in.the New Zealand law the provisions recently passed in this connection by the Imperial Parliament, and it was reciprocal legislation. When the Bill came before the House for it« second reading he would further elucidate the intricate clauses contained in it.
The Bill contains seven clauses and two schedules, the first of which provides for reciprocity to be recognised with Canada, Australai, South Africa, and Newfoundland.
The legislation is to operate for the duration of the war.
