THE QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY
His Excellency the Governor-Gene-ral has sent the following message to her Majesty the Queen: — "On behalf of the Government and peoples of New Zealand, its Island Territories, and Western Samoa, I respectfully beg to tender to your Majesty warmest congratulations and all good wishes on the occasion of your Majesty's birthday. ~
(Signed) C. L. N. NEWALL, Governor-General."
PRISONERS SENTENCED
Four prisoners were sentenced in the Supreme Court yesterday by Mr. Justice Johnston. Frederick Murray, who had been found guilty of receiving stolen property, was sentenced to 18 months' hard labour, his Honour remarking that the prisoner had a bad record, having been convicted of many offences since 1924. For the theft of a bag from the railway station James Henry Hammond received a sentence of nine months. Probation, said his Honour, was impossible, as the prisoner had been before the Court on 12 previous occasions. He was gradually going down hill, and needed pulling up. Having pleaded guilty in the lower court at Petone to the theft of £97 in money and nine gallons of petrol, Keith Eustace Burton, woolspinner, 20, was sentenced to 12 months' hard labour. The accused, said his Honour, had a bad record dating back to 1936.
Twelve months' hard labour, to be, followed by 12 months' reformative detention, was the sentence imposed upon Russell Cook on two counts of indecent assault upon a male.
