ENGLAND WINS AT CRICKET Kec. 11 a.m. LONDON, August 3. England beat the Dominions at cricket at Lord's by eight runs in a game of fluctuating fortune. Although leading the Dominions by 209 runs on the first innings, England went in again. The captain, Robins, instructed his men to 'force the pace with a vievv to an early declaration, but within 20 minutes four of England's wickets had fallen for six runs. The English side recovered, and declared at lunch at six wickets for 150. The Dominions side was faced with the task of making 360 runs in 270 minutes. Dempster played splendidly, and Constanttne, after tea, threatened to sweep his side to victory, but while trying to hit a 6 he fell to a marvellous catch by L. Compton, who leant over the rails to take it. Sismey and Clarke offered unexpected resistance,, adding 108 for the eighth wicket, then the captain, J. D. Hoberston, in his only over of the match, got both Sismey and Roper out, England just scrambling home. The scores were:— England, second innings, 150 for six wickets, declared (Holmes 45 not out, Robins 69 not out). Dominions, second innings, 351 (Dempster 113, Carmody 49, Constantine 21, Sismey 70, Clarke 52). Dempster batted for 110 minutes and hit ten 4's.
