RIGHT TO VOTE

U.S. SERVICEMEN'S WIVES

A number of New Zealand girls! have married United States servicemen, and the question has been raised whether / they will have the right to vote at the General Election. If they were British subjects before marriage their nationality has not been changed by marriage, and therefore, it was stated, today, they have the right to vote as long as they are 21 years of i age or over and have the necessary residential qualification. They should, however, notify the Registrar of Electors for their electorate of their change of name. In a statement in May the Minister j of Internal Affairs (Mr. Parry) ex- j plained that, according to United i States law. marriage did not confer citizenship upon a foreign wife. Consequently, said the Minister, a British woman marrying a United States citizen retained British nationality and travelled on a British passport.
