CONVICTION QUASHED

An appeal by Edmund Percy Freeman, waiter,*29 (Mr. G. C. Kent), who was convicted.by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., on a charge of receiving stolen goods valued at £1 14s 2d, and sentenced to two months' hard labour, has been allowed by Mr. Justice Johnston, and the conviction quashed. His Honour said there was no evidence to justify finding that the appellant knew the goods were stolen when he received them. The transactions were not carried out in secrecy, but in the public bar of a hotel, and the fact that stolen goods were found in Freeman's rooms did not mean that he knew they were stolen.
