LONG-RANGE GUNS

DUEL ACROSS CHANNEL

Rec. 1 p.m. RUGBY, July 5. Guns in the Dover area opened fire early today, starting a duel lasting about two hours with long-range guns on the French coast. Two British guns, believed to have been aiming at a convoy of enemy ships off Calais, fired at two-minute intervals for 15 minutes before the Germans responded. Then only one German gun responded spasmodically. The British salvoes increased to three and four shells, while the Germans fired mainly single shells. Some German shells fell in the vicinity of Dover, the explosions shaking the coast.—B.O.W. '
