SIGNS OF VICTORY
DETECTED BY CHINESE
OFFENSIVE BEGINNING IBy TelegTapb—Press Association Copyright • Rec. 9 a.m. NEW YORK, July 5. "Victory for China is beginning to loom on the horizon," declared Marshal Chiang Kai-shek in an interview with the "New York Herald Tribune's" Chungking correspondent. "It is diffi- ■ cult to predict the date of the victory. I Our action is dependent on America's action with which it will have to be synchronised, but the offensive phase of our war is definitely beginning." The "Herald Tribune," in an editorial, suggests that there are three significant foundations for Chiang Kaishek's new confidence: firstly, the recent victories on the Yangtze have revealed the extent to which the Japan- | ese have over-extended and bogged j down in the morass of Chinese resistance; secondly, the threat of American air power operating from Chinese bases has been developed, and thirdly, the American offensive in the South-west j Pacific is stimulating the Chinese.
