ADVERSE BALANCE
IMPORTS EXCEED EXPORTS
Customs returns of New Zealand. I overseas trade for five months ended May 31 last show an excess of imports over exports amounting to £5.572,000. This position is in sharp contrast to that of the corresponding periods of last year and of the year before when there were substantial balances of exports over imports, the excess being £13,625,000 and £12.970,000 respectively. There is, however, a small credit balance of over £500.000 to the good in the trade for May. 1943. The returns for the first five months of the past three years in New Zealand currency are as follows: — 5 months. Exports. Imports. Excess. £ £ £ 1913 ... 29,089,000 84,661,000 ■''5,572,000 1942 ... 32.191,000 18,566,000 13.H525.000 1941 .... 31.344,000 18.374.000 12,970.000 "Excess of Imports. The returns for the month of May only are as follows:—May, 1943: Exports £7.867.000: imports, £7.358,000; excess exports, £509.000.
