The weather was excellent for the | opening clay of the Wellington Winter Meeting at Trentham today. , Unfortunately, the heavy frost this morning made the track very heavy. The pair were well back in the initial circuit, when Show Day and Acrobat were having turns at making the pace,, but' Abbey Lv ran into the lead going down the back, and fencing brilliantly went1 on to a, comfortable . win from Radiant Bay, who wore down Valantua and'ldle Hour. Hastings.) ; With Dalesman coming to grief after turning into the back, Khurja was left in front of Colossal Chief and First Edition in the Vittoria Hurdles, and he increased his advantage at every obstacle.: Turning' into . the straight, First Edition^ tried to close 'the gap but the leader was never in danger. The Stewards', Handicap produced a photo-finish, Whackie, the favourite, beating Autolite by a nose .with Black Robe half a length back. Aero King and Peter Gregor were both prominent to the turn, where Whackie loomed up on. the outer and1 Black Robe closer in. Inside the last furlong and a , half Autolite came through 'on . the outer and just failed to pull Whackie back, with Black Robe, who was close into the rails, half'a length back. There was a. gap to Ring Chief and Pompit, with Sham Boy : ahead of Fur Coat.
