WAPITI IN FIORDLAND

After, spending the greater part of a month in the Fiordland wapiti country, Mr.X. Sutherland, a;wellTknown Wairarapa sportsman, arrived in Dunedin. on Wednesday with: a fine wapiti head, a 13-pointer, states the "Otago Daily Times." Mr.' Sutherland/ who has- been visiting these parts at regular: intervals' during the last 20 years m his quest for wapiti heads, made his ■base camp on the Glasnoch River, on the' north; arm of Lake , Te. Anau.- He ha.di with'him Mr. A. Clark, of the Department, of Internal -Affairs. Mr Sutherland said, the trip .was one of the most difficult, he had undertaken. Snow rain. and. frost, were frequently experi.encedi' At this time of the year the wapiti, frequent, the high' basins beI fore heavy.falls of snow!. • It took him three days to reach his base camp from the. spot where he obtained his. prize. Wapiti were plentiful, and he considered ■ that they required culling by the Government. Feed seemed to be disappearing in this section of Fiordland, and the wapiti shifted, with it. The. big bull wapiti were in poor condition, ■ but the cows were of -good quality.. Calves were seen in larger numbers .than ever .'before. : ,
