PARCELS FOR FORCES

WEIGHTS AND POSTAGE

The Postmaster-General (Mr. Webb) stated today that some misunderstanding appeared to exist regarding the rates of postage and the weight limit of parcels for members of the Forces overseas, and he desired- to clarify the position. Parcels for members of the Forces in all theatres of war overseas' ■were accepted at the following concession rates:—For a parcel not exceeding 31b, Is; not exceeding 71b, 2s; not exceeding 111b, 4s. "The limit of weight for parcels is not 71b, states Mr. Webb, "but 111b, although senders are urged, wherever possible, to keep parcels within the 71b category, owing to the desirability of conserving shipping space." The Minister also explained that some latitude was allowed in the weighing of - pai~cels because it was realised that, frequently, what was intended to be a 31b or a 71b parcel slightly exceeded that weight when packed and wrapped. In such cases, counter, officers were authorised to ignore the slight excess.
