ELECTION DATE

NOT KNOWN YET

ADJOURNMENT OF HOUSE

Members of the Opposition showed interest in the '".ate of the General Election during the discussion on the Estimates in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, but they did not obtain much satisfaction from the Prime Minister (Mr, Fraser). The subject was raised by Mr. W. Sullivan (National, Bay'of Plenty), who said that the announcement at the earliest possible date would assist members in the out-back places in arranging their programme. "I can't tell you at the moment, said the Prime Minister in reply. "There are matters, such as the-elec-toral arrangements and other things to be completed, but I hope to be in a position to indicate the date when we come back." In reply to the Leader of the Opposition (Mr. Holland) the Prime Minister repeated a previous assurance that the" election would not be sprung on the country. When the date was known it would be immediately announced. The Prime Minister added that it would be obvious to members that between July 20 and the date of the election it would mean hard work and long hours, with sittings till midnight and perhaps after in certain cases, particularly in connection with the Estimates, if they were to push through the work to allow an adequate time for the election campaign. • The House adjourned until 2.30 p.m. on July 20, with the usual proviso that members will be called together earlier if circumstances warrant such a course.
