N.Z. SPITFIRE SQUADRON

(Special P.A. Correspondent.) Rec. 12.30 p.m. LONDON, July 1.

The New Zealand Spitfire Squadron is now in a wing led by Wing Commander Alan Deere, D.5.0., D.F.C. and bar. Its new commanding officer is John Checketts (Invercargill), who has been promoted squadron leader. This means a more offensive role for the New Zealanders, who, during the past year, have been chiefly on defensive operations.

The squadron takes the place of that led by the Canadian Squadron Leader Jack Charles, D.F.C., who shared the destruction of the thousandth aircraft for Biggin Hill. His squadron, which has been on operations for some. time, has been transferred to be rested. This is a great • opportunity for the New Zealand squadron. It will fly the latest Spitfire IX's instead of the Spitfire V's, and will act with the Fighting French squadron as top cover for our bombers. •
