FIJI SUGAR STRIKE
PROSPECTIVE SETTLEMENT
SUVA, July 1.
A two-day discussion between representatives on the one hand of the Indian and Fijian labourers who are striking at the Ba and Lautoka sugar mills and, on the other, the Director of Labour and National Service, has resulted in a prospective settlement. The Labour representatives are advising all the men to return to work on Monday. Ten requests made by the delegates are being submitted to the Colonial Sugar Company, and the Director of Labour is recommending the company to accede to them. The minimum pay requested is:—Labourers (not shift), 3s 6d a day; mill labourers (shift), 4s Id. II is also requested that the pay of labourers on higher rates be increased similarly. Failing agreement, the Governor will appoint a tribunal whose decision will be final. The Director informed the men's representatives that if the labourers failed to return to work as advised, prosecutions would be recommended.
