GOOD MONTH IN MAY
ALLIED AIRMEN SCORE
Rec. 12-30 {>,m. MELBOURNE, June 29. Allied airmen in Australia's northwestern area had a record month in May for losses of aircraft inflicted on the Japanese. They destroyed 44 machines, probably destroyed 10, and damaged 16. Most of these successes were scored by airmen stationed in the Darwin sector.
Announcing .these figures the Australian Minister of War, Mr. A. S. Drakeford, said that the Allied airmen's total for the war in this ax-ea were 217 enemy aircraft destroyed, 49 probably destroyed, and 91 damagedOf the 44 enemy planes destroyed in May, 23 were fighters, nine were twin-engined aircraft, and 12 were float-planes. The Allied planes in this area also did great damage to enemy shipping and base installations. In May they sank about 1000 tons of Japanese shipping and damaged more than 4000 tons. A total of nine enemy ships has been sunk and 15 damaged in this sectoi*.
Our aircraft covered an area of more than 300,000 square miles. Mitchells, Liberators, and Hudson bombers, Lightning fighters, and Beauflghters have all contributed to the offensive operations. In a persistent series of raids enemy administrative and radio buildings have been hit, oil fires started, and many grounded aircraft damaged.
