SPORTING

AT HAWKE'S BAY

BJG FIELDS ENGAGED A big proportion of the horses engaged at the Hawkfe's Bay Meeting at Hastings tomorrow are due to come on to Trentham for the following Saturday, and the form will be closely watched in consequence. Without exception the fields filled well, and with 40 horses carded in the Hastings Maiden this event had to be divided. Figuring in the Hawke's Bay Steeples are five who have been accepted for in the Wellington Steeples, two of them being Native Chief and The Dozer, and it will be interesting to witness the display of the latter, for it will be his first essay in public in the branch, although he has schooled brilliantly in private. Seemingly, there is some doubt as to • which race both Native Chief and The Dozer will contest at Hastings, for they were also accepted for in the Hawke's Bay Hurdles. • Topweight for the Winter Handicap at Hastings, Rakanui is not engaged on the first day at Trentham, but will probably be on hand for the Parliamentary Handicap on the later Saturday. Air Port is another similarly placed. However, Centrepoise, Noble Fox, Duality, Coronace, and Flying Spy are acceptors for the Whyte Handicap, the big mile, at Trentham on the opening day. An excellent day's sport awaits patrons, and horses who may come into favour are: — . Hastings Maiden.—First division: Fescue, Lord Reay. Second division: Glad Fox, Griffin.
