NOTES AND COMMENT

In the original list of acceptances for the maiden event at Hastings the names of Heatherdine and Golden Days figured, but neither was included in a later message giving the divisions. On the other hand, the name Gold Quest makes its appearance. Leased.—The** two-year-old Gyneriess, who is engaged in the maiden event at Hastings, was bred by Mr. A. Symes, but is held on lease by Mrs. B. A. Taylor. The filly is by Gynerium* from Painted Screen, dam of Movie Star, Screen Star, Screen Lord, etc. Good Family.—Ann Hatfield, who will carry the colours of Mrs. G. A. Edmonds in the maiden event at Hastings, is by Bulandshar from Hest, by Hunting Song from the Egypt mare Hathor, dam also of Shu, Hagen, and Siyana. Two Placings.—ln his four outings to date Griffin has registered a second and a fourth. He is a two-year-old gelding by Lang Bian from La Poupee, who was a brilliant sort in her day. Griffin was taken to Riccarton for the Autumn Nursery at Easter, but was beaten into fourth. Few Representatives.. —Although he has been nominated on occasions, Waiata has still to figure under silk, but may make his debut at Hastings tomorrow. He is one of the few progeny of the defunct sire Alchemic, being from Princess Ruth. In the two preceding years Princess Ruth was mated with Lackham, the sire of Alchemic. Disappointed.—Prior to the Great Northern Meeting opening Monmouth was tried over the hurdles at Ellerslie, but he suffered a fall or two. As a result "he did his racing on the flat, only to disappoint. A repetition of the form he displayed at Tauherenikau on Easter Saturday would make him a possibility/ at Hastings. Doubly Engaged.—Noble Fox is engaged in both the big flat race and the sprint at Hastings tomorrow, being weighted at 8.0 and 9.2 respectively. This member of H. Dulieu's New Plymouth stable is steadily improving. To Reappear.—Early this year Mrs. L. Campbell, who was then at Riccarton, won a race with the Friday Night mare Cheap Lodging at Marton. Now both trainer and horse are quartered at Hastings. Cheap Lodging was to have contested the Ruahine Hack Handicap at Manawatu last Saturday, but was prevented from doing so. She is down to run at the Hawke's Bay Meeting tomorrow, but is meetirig a strong field. Both Failed. —At Awapuni last Saturday Irish Morn and Tideover were bracketed in the Mangawhata Hack Handicap, but neither finished in the money. They are racing at Hastings tomorrow, being in the Rotopai Handicap, but will not be coupled. Irish Morn is an Illumination gelding from Mrs. E. M. Sloane's stable at Te Rapa, and Tideover is a Tidal—Mercian Lass mare temporarily under the care of B. Burgess at Awapuni.
