REMARKABLE RESULT

MENINGITIS TREATMENT

(Rec. noon)

NEW YORK, June IJL

Dr. Emanuel Appelbaum, chief of the Meningitis Division of the New York City Health Department, obtained the recovery rate of 95 per cent, in 221 cases of meningitis which were treated with sulfadiazine of which only eight died. The newspaper "P.M." says that the significance of these figures may be gauged by the fact that in 1942 ona meningitis victim in five died. This year, witnessed a widespread meningitis epidemic and nearly 10.000 cases have been reported since January 1. This is seven times higher than the total for 1942. Almost as stunning as the low death rate, says Dr. Appelbaum. is the wonderful speed and simplicity with which cases clear up. Moreover, no relapses have been reported.
