TAX ANOMALIES

CRITICISM BY M.P.

A plea for more favourable treatment of the £350- £600 income class, which,' he declared, suffered anomalies, was made by Mr. Morgan Williams (Government, Kaiapoi) in his Budget speech in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. The most equitable way of removing anomalies, he declared, was to make the family allowance universal.

Many men today were working overtime, and the only effect was that their income was less than if they had not worked overtime, added Mr. Williams. Mr. Lee had raised that point and was right, and it might interest him to know that at the Easter Conference the Labour Party had endorsed the principle of a universal family allowance, and referred it to the Government for favourable consideration.
