WAR EFFORT PRAISED

LORD BURGHLEY'S VISIT

Questions of mutual interest relating to repairs of aircraft and overseas supply were discussed by Lord Burghley on his recent visit to Australia, and, in an interview in Wellington today, he mentioned that he would be returning to Australia shortly to complete his business there. He was delighted, to have had the opportunity of coming to New Zealand, a country he knew well in the matter of sport and in other spheres. , One of his particular friends from New Zealand was Dr. Arthur Porritt (who was also an Olympic Games representative), and tribute was paid by Lord Burghley to the fine job of work that Dr. Porritt had done in the Near East and was doin.g now in England through the specialist knowledge gained in that war theatre. "We owe a great debt of gratitude to this country," said Lord Br ghley in speaking highly of New Zealand's contribution to the war effort. "Not only are you supplying us with the sinews of war—food—but your Division has done a great job with the fighting forces." He paid tribute also to the contribution that Australia was making in the Allied cause.
