MR. G. H. BULLARD
Mr. George Henry Bullard, who was for 46 years a member of the staff of the Lands and Survey Department, died at his home in Hataitai yesterday, in his eighty-fourth year.
The late Mr. Bullard was born in England and came to New Zealand as an infant. He was educated at Nelson College, where he distinguished himself in mathematics. After two years as a cadet in the Post and Telegraph Department he joined the Lands and Survey Department in 1879 and served his apprenticeship in the Reefton district. He passed his professional examination in 1882, and was employed as assistant surveyor in the Nelson district until 1897, when he was transferred to New Plymouth as district surveyor. From 1909 to 1912 he was district land officer and inspecting surveyor at Gisborne, and three years later was appointed chief surveyor and Commissioner of Crown Lands in Taranaki. He remained there until 1920, when he was appointed to a similar position in Canterbury. He retired in November, 1925* During his long service with the Government Mr. Bullard did not have a single day's sick leave, and up to a few days before his death was still acting as a member of the Survey Board, which conducts the professional examinations, j On his retirement Mr. Bullard went to live in Hataitai, where he became a popular member of the local bowling club. His other hobbies were mathematics and gardening. Mr. Bullard's wife died eight years ago. He leaves one son, Mr. J. N. Bullard, Wellington, and four daughters, Mrs. R. J. Fuller (Queenstown), Mrs. L. J. List (Mcl- j bourne), Mrs. R. M. Kane (Hataitai), and Mrs. S. Worseldene (India).
