MAHAINA SURPRISES

AWAPUNI'S BIG f URNOVER

(By "Binocular.")

Perfect weather and track conditions were offering at Awapuni for the Manawatu Autumn Meeting on Saturiay, and th<?re was a particularly big :ro\vd present. However, with overarse fields necessitating divisions in wo instances, a good deal of money was shut out early in the day, and tnder the circumstances the club did well to handle £63,343 10s, compared .vith £33.384 10s on the opening day jf the 1941 meeting on the home •ourse.

The King George Handicap, the principal distance event, was a disippointing race, all the recognised stayers being beaten .out of the money as a result of the slow pace set for the first mile. Daljarroek and Mahaina were practically ■on terms after passing' the five-furlong post, with Stairway and Jonathan Jo next in the running. In the next furlong Happy Ending improved his position to be threatening danger three furlongs from home, but in the run home Mahaina had the measure of Daljarrqck, beating him by hall: a length, with Classform coming wide out in a late run for third. Come True and Jonathan Jo were next to finish, the three topweights being at the rear.

Clarice made amends for her Trentham failure in the Johnston Memorial. She had some ground to make up early, but was handy on the turn, and then, ran down the pacemaker. Lady Acora, quite comfortably. Minority, after a slow beginning, pushed through 'along the rail for third, with Whackie and Theolateral next. Whackie had every chance, but Theolateral was pinched for room in the straight. THE MINOR EVENTS. Three Awapuni-trained horses filled the placings in the Kairanga Hurdles, i Native Chief's superior pace on the Hat carrying him through to victory from Vitement, with Cuisinier third. Resingold came Jiome strongly for fourth.

A bracketed pair, Vera Lynn and Pox Cover, took their respective divisions in the Autumn Plate, but whereas the former had little to spare from Fort Royal, Fox Cover won comfortably from Kahuranaki, Avho had fol-

lowed him throughout, with Statue handy. Solver, the third place-getter in the first division, came home particularly well.

Screen, a firm favourite; i'or the Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes, showed a tendency to bore out after hitting the front, and Virtuoso worried her out of the decision. Wee Bun was handy to Screen all the way. The Auckland visitor, Subadar, never threatened real danger. In the first division of the Woodhey Hack Handicap Crispin retired after leading to the straight, and Corday ran down Sea Quex and Waipero over the final furlong. Foxcatcher was a creditable fourth. Man-power acted as pacemaker right into the straight j in the second division, but Plato Lad j then took over, only to be gathered j up in the last, stride by Te Awe Awe. Embroider finished brilliantly for third, with Bright Fox fourth. j After racing to the front with Par Avion going away from home in the Longbum Handicap. High Class dropped back a couple of places, Hippodrome and Alethea deposing her in turn but in the. straight High Class i came fast to wear down Par Avion, i with Alethea . half a head away. iGlenfalloch was a useful fourth. The third double-figure dividend of i the day was posted in the Adderstone Hack Handicap when Fiddler's Green came through the centre of the bunch to wear down Golden Acre and Alchemy, with Sunblaze fourth. War i Effort came home solidly but too late !to figure in the placings. I DETAILED RESULTS. ! The detailed results were: — Kalranga Hurdles, £250; 1% miles.—l Native Chief, 10.12 (K.
