AUSTRALIAN TAXATION

MELBOURNE, February 16.

When the Commonwealth's latest taxation is applied at the beginning of April, Australians will be paying heavier war taxes than wage earners in any other of the United Nations. Direct taxation will be greater, over the whole range of income, than in Britain, and greater than in New Zealand, except over a small range of lower incomes, according to figures prepared by the Victorian Taxpayers' Association. The following tabulation sets out the new Australian rates and the rates payable in Britain and New Zealand in respect of income from personal exertion of taxpayers without children: —

It is pointed out here that the Australian contribution is predominantly war taxation, as against New Zealand's, which is designed partly to finance its social service scheme. It is also estimated that the Australian taxpayer gets less by \vay_ of social services than the taxpayer in Britain.
