TAX PROSECUTIONS
On each of two charges pf neghV gently furnishing a false return of in* come Frank William Bedford, a tailor, was fined £2 by Mr. W. F. StUwell, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court. For, the Commissioner of Taxes, Dr. N. A." Foden said thatNthe total deficient income tax was £ 179, and in one year Bedford had shown a loss of £1361, whereas an income tax inspector ascertained that his income in that year was £481. For the defendant Mr. W. E. Leicester explained that Bedford had no knowledge of accountancy and his offence arose from misunderstanding of what tax returns should contain. In fixing the penalty the Magistrate took into consideration a fine of £100 imposed last year over deficiencies .of sales tax arising out of the same circumstances. Stanley Frederick Malmanche, a land agent, for whom Mr. W. J. Stacey' appeared, was fined £2 10s for neglecting to furnish a return i of income. Counsel said that Malmanche thought he did not have to make a returni a* his net income was under £200.
